Attractions Aplenty

What to See

We’ve told you already about the numerous Red Kites, the Buzzards, the Hares and the occasional Red Squirrel. You can watch for these just through the windows or by sitting in the garden at the Cottage.

The countryside around is also full of wild flowers such as Eyebright and the traditional Scottish thistle, as well as classics such as Roe deer, foxes, badgers and rabbits.

Dumfries and Galloway has plenty of forests you can explore too. Some are breath-taking if you have never seen a Scottish forest close up. Just ask us where the best ones are to visit.

Places To Go

Visit the Red Squirrels at Eskrigg Nature Reserve, just down the road out of Lockerbie. Or take a walk up Burnswick Hill to see the stunning 360 degree views out to the coast. A day trip to one of the cities, or Eskdalemuir and the Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre. Hadrian’s Wall or the Garden of Remembrance for Pan Am.

If Peter Pan is your thing then visit Moat Brae whose gardens inspired J M Barrie.  Not forgetting the Grey Mares Tail a 60 metre hanging valley waterfall near Moffat, or even Drumlanrig Castle, let alone what you might come across at the Devil’s Porridge Museum.

Whatever takes your fancy, just ask us for some tips. We’re locals, so who better to ask?

What To Do

Did we mention the Gin? There’s nothing quite like relaxing at one of the distilleries in the area. Of course, Scotland is famous for its whisky distilleries too and there are plenty of those to choose from!

Walking, driving, wildlife spotting, lakes, sea, hills, drinking, cycling, shopping (the Gretna Gateway Outlet Village is only 20 mins away), eating. It’s all here!

We have provided you with a comprehensive guide, packed full of ideas or simply go your own way to discover everything you can enjoy from a stay at Kites Cottage.
