About Your Stay

Some Useful Information

Kites Cottage sits on Balgray Hill within the Balgray Estate. As with most traditional Scottish country estates there is plenty of activity going on at certain times of the year.

There can, for instance, be a plethora of pheasants running around, and yes, they do like our garden! The cottage is accessed via a rural single-track lane winding its way up the hill.

Kites Cottage is set in a working agricultural environment consisting of predominantly beef cattle and sheep.

When we renovated Kites Cottage, we decided to ‘go green’. For heating and hot water we installed an Air Source Heat Pump. This miraculous technology extracts the heat from the air outside, even when it is -15 degrees, and brings it into the Cottage. We don’t know the science, but the Cottage certainly benefits from the heat.

When you want just that little bit more, maybe after a long walk in the stunning countryside surrounding the Cottage on a chilly day, you can snuggle up in front of the woodburning stove. It will heat the house from top to bottom.

Of course, we realise that it is important to stay in touch with the outside world if you want or need while on your holiday. Our broadband is therefore all yours to enjoy!

Despite the rumours, the sun does shine in Scotland. We hope you enjoy sitting out on the terrace, overlooking the garden, and directly across to the Galloway hills, miles into an uncluttered distance.

We would love to be your hosts for your special holiday in Scotland.

Some important things worth knowing about

Tesco is located in Lockerbie. Just turn left at the main crossroads if you approach from the Cottage. There are plenty of other shops within the town for anything else you might need.

Lockerbie has restaurant facilities located within the hotels in the area as well as some good cafes and takeaways. The nearby town of Moffat also has restaurants to try such as Brodies Restaurant, Gin and Coffee Lounge and Italian cuisine courtesy of Claudios.

The nearest hospital is in Dumfries, a 30 minute drive from Lockerbie.

We welcome well-behaved dogs to the Cottage. We just ask that they don’t jump on the furniture. Bear in mind also that a dog lives next door so noses might bump through the fence.

Children are most welcome to stay, but we don’t have facilities for babies such as a cot. Be aware that we have a spiral staircase for going upstairs so children need to take care if they choose to sleep upstairs.
